A YEAR IN MEDIA MONITORING: REPORT 2018/19

Get The Trolls Out! has produced a report, authored by Dr. Verica Rupar, which looks at the first full year of media monitoring in the project. It summarises results, such as which types of media platform hosts the most hate speech and what kind of hatred was most prevalent, as well as provides recommendations for future work.

Dr. Rupar on the publication: “The report explores the significance of the findings and provides methodological recommendations for setting up similar projects in the future.”

The report concludes that Islamophobia was the dominant kind of hatred in the sample of media content, followed by implied references to religion in anti-migrant and anti-refugees messages as well as antisemitic messages and racism.

The project started monitoring the media for antireligious hate speech and inflammatory reporting in January 2018. Project manager Lydia El-Khouri shares: “We have spent a little over a year monitoring the traditional and social media for incidents of anti-religious hate in Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary and the UK with some very interesting findings. Our project will continue to monitor both and draw attention to incidents of hate towards religious groups in the media.”
