Facebook Marks Holocaust Remembrance Day with Launch of Education Campaign

“Transmitting the history of the Holocaust is key to combatting denial and conspiracy theories today” – emphasises Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General. Launched on Holocaust Remembrance Day this year, Facebook initiative to connect people to credible information about the Holocaust goes some way towards this goal.

From now, Facebook will direct anyone who searches for terms associated with the Holocaust or, conversely, Holocaust denial to aboutholocaust.org. Developed by World Jewish Congress with the support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), this website provides credible information about the history of the Holocaust, its enduring legacy and features survivor testimonies. In an official press release, Facebook VP of Integrity Guy Rosen emphasised that this tool aims to counter “the well-documented rise in anti-Semitism globally and the alarming level of ignorance about the Holocaust, especially among young people.”

For now, this tool is only available in English-speaking countries including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States. Functionality in other languages is expected in the coming months.

GTTO partners The European Union of Jewish Students and Amadeu Antonio Stiftung contributed their expertise to the development of this tool.
