CHANGING IPSO
IPSO, the largest independent regulator of the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK, works to enforce the Editor's Code of Practice, by investigating complaints and forcing newspapers to publish corrections when they breach the code.
The Problem
Despite being the main newspaper regulator in the UK, IPSO has rarely punished papers for racist, anti-religious and anti-migrant language, rarely imposed fines and forced corrections have not prevented repeated hate-speech.
Clause 12
Clause 12 of the Editor’s Code is meant to protect individuals from discrimination, by the press, based on their race, religion or disability. It does not apply to groups or categories of people. This allows newspapers to target entire groups using discriminatory language
Open Consultation
IPSO held an open consultation for suggestions on how to improve their code. As we, and many, felt that Clause 12 is NOT fit for purpose, we created our Changing IPSO campaign to encourage others into pressuring the body into changing Clause 12 to include groups .
