Nyimas Bantaba on Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan

After the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan, girls and women have been increasingly pushed out of public life. Nyima talks to two women human rights activists about the current situation. Their message to the international community is clear: “Be honest with Afghan women. There is a country where, in the 21st century, girls cannot go to school. And the whole world is just watching.”

In this special edition of Nyimas Bantaba for Get The Trolls Out!, show host Nyima Jadama invited Wazhma Tokhi (former member of the Afghan Youth Parliament) and Sharareh Azizi (former employee at Equality for Peace and Democracy) to discuss what is now full gender apartheid in Afghanistan.

“Half of the Afghan population is completely excluded from education and public life. Women lost everything in one day, and this is a catastrophe”, says Wazhma Tokhi.

“Things were difficult also before, but there was hope. Now the situation is unbearable for everyone, and the international community is silent”, adds Sharareh Azizi.

After escaping death threats, Wazhma and Sharareh continue to support Afghan women from abroad through online educational projects delivering skills and knowledge. They both stress the urgent need for support from the international community and the importance of investing in education.
