ENORB COMPLAINT TO L’ECHO FOR GIVING PLATFORM TO ANTI-MUSLIM SENTIMENT

L'Echo De Keyser Interview Nov 2020.JPG

Get The Trolls Out! partner ENORB have sent a letter of complaint to L’Echo after the daily newspaper L’Echo published an interview with Véronique De Keyser, former MEP and current director of the Secular Action Centre (CAL), focusing on the killing of the French teacher Samuel Paty in October. After briefly mentioning the cartoons of Prophet Mohammed, De Keyser expressed her views on feminism and the headscarf. When discussing a recent regulation in the Molenbeek municipality (Brussels) that allows civil servants to display religious symbols, De Keyser states that she would like “the same law for everyone” and that she is “not against the veil, but it must be the choice of women except in spaces like the civil service.” To read further info on the case, click here.

In their complaints, ENORB stated: “The journalist does not provide any counter-arguments, such as recalling that Muslim women are on the front lines fighting for their rights, and does not question the argument that Muslim women are silenced by a patriarchal model to which they are subjected. Our aim is to illustrate and raise awareness on the impact of these narratives, especially in a broader context of stigmatization of minorities. As you can understand, these associations have the effect of reinforcing stereotypes against minorities on the one hand, despite disinterested intentions, and then increasing the distrust of minorities towards the media on the other hand.”

ENORB has not received a reply as of yet - this page will be updated if and when L’Echo responds.
