KARPOS COMPLAINS TO ELEYTHEROS TYPOS ABOUT ISLAMOPHOBIC ARTICLE

Karpos, Get the Trolls Out! partner organisation in Greece, has sent a complaint letter to the daily newspaper Eleytheros Typos to express concerns about an article titled “Islamism, Voltaire and Turkey’’.

This piece, published on 11 February 2021, presents Islam as a religion that does not allow any criticism from the inside and that is intrinsically violent. The author blames “Islamic tradition” as the only cause of Islamic terrorism rather than considering socio-economic inequalities and geopolitical issues.

In their letter to the editor, Karpos addresses the dangers of repeating harmful stereotypes about Islam and the Muslim population, specifically when referring to Islamic terrorism, as this might fuel stigmatisation and lead to violence.

The complaint letter stated: “While your opinion is fully respected, we can only observe that it is part of a common framework of criticism of Islam which is full of stereotypes and superficial analyses about a religion that counts millions of believers around the world.”

At the time of writing, Eleytherosp Typos has not replied to Karpos.
