KARPOS COMPLAINS TO IN.GR ABOUT PRESENTING THE QURAN IN A BIASED MANNER

Get The Trolls Out Greek partner organization Karpos complained to popular news website in.gr after the platform published an article by Andreas Andrianopoulos, a former politician and now well-respected author. In the article, Andrianopoulos makes numerous claims about the Quran, presenting these as facts, despite now having theological or historical accreditations. Karpos wrote directly to the platform to complain about the piece:

“We appeal to you to express our dissatisfaction with the reproduction on your website of Islamophobic positions based on stereotypes and conspiracy theories, despite the scientific study of the doctrine of Islam.”

“The article seeks to interpret Islam as inherently anti-democratic, supposedly citing elements from the Qur'an itself. He [Andrianopoulos] stressed the supposed "obligation" of Muslims to settle in the West in order to spread Islam and impose themselves on other religions - this is also known as the “Great Replacement” theory. Among those who support this theory are extremists such as the New Zealand terrorist who killed more than 50 people and injured so many others in a mosque in 2019.”

“It is a surprise to us to read in such a reputable medium as your own an analysis of a religious system that, like Christianity, is supported by both honest and peaceful believers as well as extreme and dangerous elements. We will not go into the process of defending Islam; however, we would like to note that quoting verses from the Qur'an that suggest violence are not sufficient to ‘prove’ the supposedly inherent violence in Islam.

“Our only request is related to the balanced and objective presentation of Muslims by the media, as well as the faithful of every other religion. In our opinion, Mr. Andrianopoulos' article contains so many distortions that it should not have a place in the public space. However, because we are not ethereal and realise that it is neither the only nor the most racist text on the issue, the only thing we would ask for is the publication of an article by another columnist with a different approach to Islam, so that the reader can be exposed to different systems of thought and possibly be influenced by what he or she thinks is best documented.”
