Karpos complains to Kathimerini for repeatedly publishing Islamophobic and sensationalistic articles

GTTO (Get the Trolls Out!)partner in Greece, Karpos sent a complaint to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini expressing their concerns about an Islamophobic article published in November 2021 and titled "The vocabulary of political correctness".

Written by the writer Takis Theodoropoulou, known for sharing Islamophobic views in the Greek media. The journalist highlights cultural differences as ‘problematic’ and categorise Muslims as villains threatening the Greek society.

The author argues that the word "Islamophobia" is a “neologism that has no place in our contemporary vocabulary.” and that it should not have a negative connotation, as it is normal to be afraid of Muslims.”

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Karpos has noticed anti-Muslim content on the Kathimerini.

Karpos wrote on their complaint: "We have now lost count of the cases of your writing that reproduce Islamophobic arguments. However, we believe it is never in vain a controversy, and that is why we come back to point out one more."

The writer’s sensationalistic style fuels fear and hatred against religious minorities, specifically the Muslim community.

Karpos stated that the author uses derogatory language for millions of people, and Theodoropoulou’s views are strategically planned to disorient the readers who are not familiar with such offensive terminologies.

In their complaint, Karpos pointed out that the author regularly writes articles with Islamophobic statement while denying hatred towards the Muslim communities.

Karpos stated: " As an organisation that monitors articles on groups of different ethnics, racial, religious characteristics of your own, we will not stop pointing out, to you and elsewhere, that Islam is not a single, indivisible entity."

To raise awareness of the consequences of this Islamophobic media coverage, in December Karpos organised an online workshop titled "Words break bones". The event was led by the trainer Anna Szilágyi and saw the participation of people from various professional fields such as media, education, psychology.
