When you're on national television, the last thing you should do is to amplify the message of a terrorist group which would not have reached a large audience by itself, all because it suits your line of argument.⁠⠀

A random, unrelated Islamophobic outburst when discussing a rape and murder case, actually happened. On 17th May, Panagiotis Economou (a lawyer by profession) was writing for Athens Voice, a Greek media outlet, to discuss the rape and murder of Eleni Topaloudi. ⁠⠀

When asked about Anderlecht protests, Belgium's Minister of the Interior Pieter de Crem, insinuated that people with migrant backgrounds are not compatible with Belgian society; a statement that was repeated uncritically by the national television channel RTBF. ⁠⠀

How often do you read beyond the headline? ⁠Greek Paper 'Newsbomb' decided to publish an article with videos accusing local Mosques of continuing to use loudspeakers for their call to prayer despite the law passed by the Greek government.⁠ The videos however, were taken before the measures were implemented. Far down in the article the author actually embeds an official statement from the Mufti of Komotini explaining that due to the law change, their Mosque will no longer use the loudspeakers. ⁠⠀

Is this the logic that goes into the #journalism that we depend on?⁠ Proto Thema, a well-established right-wing newspaper in Greece, recently published an article based on a video supposedly filmed at the Greek border. The author says how the #refugees are 'invading' Greece, shouting 'Allahu Akbar'. The problem is, the only source for this article was a Tweet by right-wing account Generation Europa. Responsible journalism investigates and checks sources, and should not simply repeat racist claims but a biased social media account.⁠⠀

This was the excuse National Rally politician Alain Mondino made when he shared an antisemitic conspiracy theory video on his social media channels, which claimed that the Coronavirus was "developed by the Jews'' in order to "establish their supremacy"⁠⠀

Eleana Vlastou said she was 'scared for her life' at seeing a Muslim man take out his prayer mat on a London tube. She also believes that political correctness means she is unable to criticise anyone without being called racist....

German newspaper BILD decided to immediately assume an attack in Gelsenkirchen was Islamic terrorism, and published a headline declaring as much without any confirmation from officials.

By reporting them without any scrutiny. De Standaard normalises political party Vlaams Belang's Islamophobic positions. ⁠⠀
