KARPOS complains to EKKLISIA ONLINE for painting Islam as an evil religion
EKKLISIA ONLINE claim that Islam is a source of evil or a distorted religion in their recent article. KARPOS made the complaint because such unfair and aggressive views affect all Greek citizens especially Greek Muslims living in harmony with Greek Christians.
KARPOS rightly state that,
“The generalised tendency of considering Muslims as culturally inferior because of their beliefs violates freedom of religion laws and a general respect for others.”
By highlighting difference while ignoring similarities between Greek citizens EKKLISIA ONLINE incite hateful views of Muslims.
In their complaint, KARPOS wrote: “we would like to point out the stereotypical and harmful correlation of the Muslim religion with the political decision of the Turkish government to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention, which you are attempting to make in your opinion-based article published on March 26, signed by the Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus.”
KARPOS monitor the Greek media in order to detect incidents of hate speech like this one that are derogatory, offensive or offensive to the religious faith of specific groups (Christians, Muslims and Jews).
Unfortunately, this is not the first time they have seen content on EKKLISIA ONLINE’s site that is unnecessarily offensive towards Islam.
The recent article "Piraeus to Erdogan: That 's why Islam records horrific crimes of domestic violence against women" is both Islamophobic and offensive to all devout Muslims who claim equality, dignity and peace and consider their scriptures to be a guide to a better life.
KARPOS explains how, “the stereotypical notion that the Muslim religion is a distorted understanding of the divine or even a source of evil, is an unjust and aggressive behaviour even towards our fellow citizens, Greek Muslims, who live in harmony with the Christian faithful.”
“We cannot get into the essence of theological arguments as this is not our role, but we can understand and therefore react to the general tendency for Muslims to be considered culturally inferior because of their religious beliefs.” say KARPOS.
Such views are especially unjust in countries like Greece where secularism and laws protecting religious freedoms encourage citizens to respect one another.
