KARPOS Complains to Greece’s Oldest Financial Newspaper Naftemporiki for Spreading the ‘Great Replacement’ Myth
GTTO! (Get The Trolls Out!) partner in Greece, Karpos Centre for Education and Intercultural Communication have sent a letter of complaint to Greece’s oldest financial daily Naftemporiki about a recent article titled ‘Is Islam a threat to Europe?’.
Written by the financial journalist Athanasios Char Papandropoulos, this article covertly propagates the debunked ‘Great Replacement’ myth.
Papandropoulos argues that Islam is “the biggest problem of a united Europe”, second only to “so-called melting pot” society. In making this argument, the author intentionally discards statistical evidence that consistently shows that Muslims in Europe coexist peacefully with other groups and the writer points to just the few incidents of violence.
Instead, the writer selectively highlights a few violent incidents, ignoring the fact that people of all religious background participate in violent behaviors. But, mainstream media in Europe disproportionally focus on incidents involving Muslims, stigmatizing Muslim communities, contributing to inter-religious tensions and creating a climate of fear.
In their complaint, Karpos explained,
“We want to draw attention to this article’s failure to adhere to professional standards, such as hazardous generalizations, use and propagation of intolerant ideas, and the spreading of fake news.”
This page will be updated if and when Karpos receive a response from Naftemporiki.
